Why I Advise People with Entity Attachments to Stop Talking to Their Spirit Guides (For Now)

The journey to being clear of entity attachmentA part of my practice involves working with people who have entity or spirit attachments. These are different than spirit guides. Entities are beings without physical bodies who interact with my clients non-consensually. My clients don’t want them there, and yet they’re experiencing unpleasant disturbances of varying intensity and difficulty. I want to help you protect yourself from entity attachment

When you’re seeking to protect yourself from entity attachment, it’s crucial to understand the difference between entities and spirit guides and to understand the added risk involved in certain spiritual practices.  It’s like someone undergoing chemotherapy.  Going to live theater is a beautiful experience but could be contraindicated for an immune compromised person.

Two Formats

I created both a recording and an article.  They are each a little different but cover the same basic material.  If you’d rather listen, you can do so here:

TD;DR Version

If you’re dealing with entity attachments, I advise pausing attempts to talk to your spirit guides because opening psychic pathways can accidentally connect you to entities pretending to help, since unlike spirit guides, who wait quietly, entities actively seek your energy and attention. Clearing entities takes more than outside help; it also requires strengthening your own energy field and building solid psychic boundaries. Instead of reaching outward, it’s safer to turn inward and connect with your Inner Wise One, who can guide you without risk of interference. Your guides are still supporting you even if you don’t feel like you can consciously hear them—it’s simply wise to protect yourself from worsening or persistent entity attachment until you’re fully clear and strong enough to engage safely.

Full Version

Clearing entities can be complex. While outside help is often valuable, a clearing alone is frequently incomplete. It’s essential for the person to do their own “homework”: strengthening their energy field, maintaining energetic hygiene, and learning best practices. There’s often also a need for someone skilled in this weird, wacky area to deal with complex attachments.  To use a very mundane analogy, if you have clogged pipes, you might be able to deal with them, but if it’s a complex problem, you’ll likely need a plumber.  That being said, the adult skill of not putting inappropriate things down the drain is also important.  Energetically sensitive, psychic people just have a few additional areas in which a basic mastery of energetic skills and access to on demand specialized help is important to quality of life.

As a former engineer, I’m always correlating data, looking for patterns and wisdom that could serve a broader audience. Not everyone can afford my services—or those of someone like me. So I want to share as much support as possible for those who are working toward protection from spirit attachment. I have deep compassion for how this issue becomes just one more burden layered atop the already complex challenges of human life.

Why Talking to Spirit Guides Can Make Entity Problems Worse

One pattern I see often is that clients dealing with entities are still trying to talk to their spirit guides. One of their biggest challenges is not being able to discern whether the voices or impressions they’re receiving are from true guides or from entities.

I hear: “I thought I was receiving helpful information from my spirit guides. But then it started to feel bad. Then it got scary and awful.”

And I understand. People drawn toward communicating with spirit guides are often more vulnerable to entities. Many are deeply curious about metaphysical subjects, energy healing, and the mysteries of the universe. That’s natural and beautiful.

So, my advice is like a doctor telling a patient with a broken ankle, “If you want it to heal, you need to stay off it.” That’s a hard ask. In the same way, it’s hard to tell someone dealing with entities: “You really need to stop trying to talk to your spirit guides right now.”

I want to explain why I give this advice, even if you decide not to follow it. My hope is to help you make informed choices, particularly if you’re actively seeking to protect yourself from entity attachment. So often people find themselves in situations where there was no way they could have known they’d end up with an entity problem ahead of time.

The Importance of Volitional Control

One of the most significant differences between a shamanic practitioner and someone dealing with mental health challenges such as schizophrenia is volitional control over engagement in ordinary and non-ordinary reality.

Ordinary reality is the world we can see and touch. Non-ordinary reality is the energetic, unseen dimension, a term from Michael Harner in The Way of the Shaman. The ability to choose when and how to perceive and engage with non-ordinary reality is crucial. It’s the difference between psychic abilities feeling like a gift and a source of wonder, or becoming a source of fear, distraction, and impairment in daily life.

Being able to focus your intention reliably and effectively is fundamental. Beyond that, it’s vital to be able to maintain clear boundaries regarding which beings you interact with in non-ordinary reality.  Yes, I have a program for that 🙂

For people dealing with entities, there’s often significant confusion:  “Am I hearing my spirit guides—or is this an entity?”

If that question is arising, my recommendation is simple: “Don’t talk to beings who aren’t in bodies right now.”

Because even with the most beautiful intentions, opening psychic pathways without having fully developed ability to protect them, makes you vulnerable. It’s like opening all the doors and windows to let in fresh air and light, only to find mosquitoes swarming inside. You didn’t mean to invite in entities, but the space wasn’t secured.

The Difference Between Spirit Guides and Entities

Genuine spirit guides draw their energy from sources other than humans.

  • Land guardians are in a symbiotic relationship with the energy of the land.
  • Power animals draw their strength from the lower world.
  • Ascended masters, teachers, and ancestors who’ve crossed over properly draw their energy from the upper world.

The guides we work with have energy to share. They can offer support and perform work on our behalf without depleting us. Even when I’m undertaking complex healing journeys, engaging with my spirit guides doesn’t leave me feeling drained, just sometimes tired from the intense focus the work can require.

Entities, however, (and I’m including ghosts in this category) often use humans as an energy source. They typically can’t take much energy unless we notice them and even more so, if we engage with them. For someone already struggling with life’s challenges, an entity attachment can feel massive, primarily because it stirs up fear, overstimulation, and exhaustion. It’s like dealing with a cloud of gnats during a heart attack—the gnats (entities) are annoying, but the heart attack is the most pressing crisis.  Still, I often hear that my clients are deferring important health, relationship, and economic actions trying to deal with the entity situation first.

Since there’s not a clear and definitive path forward, it’s helpful to have meantime relief (check out my program on “Free Yourself from Entities” for more on this).  And we don’t want to prolong the journey to being free of entities, any more than the person with a broken ankle wants the healing process to take longer.  So not trying to talk to your spirit guides until this is fully handled is an important piece.

Entities feed on our reactivity. Yelling at them, arguing, or even focusing intensely on them can create an energetic “all-you-can-eat buffet.” They may even invite more of their kind. While I’m very skilled at clearing entities, convincing clients they’re truly gone is often the bigger challenge.  I’ve shared details elsewhere about why it still feels like entities are attached even after a successful clearing.

Psychic Communication: Guides or Unwelcome Guests?

When you try to hear your guides, for example, asking, “What should I do about my career?”, “What should I know about this relationship?”, “Is this trip a good idea?”, you’re opening your psychic perception outward. As a trained practitioner, I’ve developed strong pathways and boundaries so entities can’t “answer the call.” My connection with my guides is like a secure, private line.  It’s like having kick ass spam filters and excellent privacy shields.

But if you haven’t yet mastered psychic boundaries, trying to “dial out” psychically can connect you to whatever’s lurking around.

Think about being online.  Many of us have seen the meme with a cat sitting in front of a giant pile of hot dogs captioned “What it’s like to be a woman online.”  I, like the women I know on social media, regularly receive “friend” requests from men we’ve never met making bids to start random conversations.

These strangers have agendas. They want your attention, engagement, and sometimes your money—and they’re not concerned about the impact on you. Likewise, entities have their own agenda. Your well-being isn’t on their radar.

Spirit guides, on the other hand, aren’t seeking engagement. They wait patiently and quietly, holding space without pushing for connection.

It’s a bit like a conversation I sometimes have with female clients who tell me they always attract the wrong men. There can be many reasons for that, but for some, it’s connected to carrying the archetype of the healer. The wounded masculine is passionately drawn to women who carry that archetype. As a result, balanced, healthy suitors can sometimes be trampled by the far more intense and persistent wounded men who are trying—often unconsciously—to resolve deep inner pain.

These men engage vigorously in trying to capture attention because they have their own agenda. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re bad people; it simply means the people who pursue you most passionately might not be the best match. So, it’s not always about “attracting the wrong people.” It’s often about cultivating discernment to recognize that passionate pursuit or love-bombing can be a sign of deeper issues.

Similarly, entities have an agenda of drawing energy from you. They actively seek connection and engagement, unlike our spirit guides, who simply remain available without pushing for attention. Spirit guides hold space gently and wait for your invitation, while entities work much harder to capture your awareness and energy.  And they can fill the space around you and create a lot of psychic noise, making it impossible to hear your spirit guides.

Entities often pretend to be spirit guides because it’s an excellent strategy for capturing attention and getting access to your energy. That’s why, if you can’t reliably command and protect your energetic space, it can be problematic to open yourself up to a conversation with a being who isn’t in a body.

I should pause here to note that it’s usually not the fault of anyone who ends up with these attachments.  Yes, if you did some black magic, that’s on you.  But most of my clients just have amazing psychic gifts and were raised in a culture that denies and disregards those gifts, so they got no training, or worse, bad information.  When this natural, essential part opens up, sometimes there’s beauty and sometimes they get tripped up in ways they never could have imagined.  And finding reliable guidance can be confusing and frustrating.

Going Inward: The Inner Wise One

If you’re dealing with entity challenges and long for access to the wisdom of your spirit guides in navigating life, there’s an alternative approach.

Instead of sending your awareness outward to engage with beings outside your body, you can turn inward. One of the most powerful tools I know is connecting with what I call your Inner Wise One.

Your Inner Wise One:

  • Is always with you.
  • Can safely communicate with your spirit guides on your behalf.
  • Can gather wisdom from your body, mind, soul purpose, and guides.
  • Is immune to being fooled by entities.

Turning inward and working with your Inner Wise One is one of the safest ways to protect yourself from entity attachment while still being connected to spirit and your higher self.

Your Inner Wise One translates spiritual guidance into practical, everyday wisdom. Sometimes it’s beautifully simple:

  • Drink some water.
  • Breathe.
  • Move your body.
  • Check in with your emotions.

Sometimes it’s deeper: “this job/relationship/way of engaging isn’t serving you.”

Many of us crave elaborate insights or dramatic cosmic answers. But often, the real solutions lie in self-care and being home with ourselves. I’m not dismissing past-life or ancestral clearing—it can be essential work—but sometimes, practical steps in the here and now bring far more relief and clarity.

Entities thrive on chaos, drama, and emotional charge. Your Inner Wise One, by contrast, brings steadiness, compassion, and clarity.

Can You Ever Talk to Your Guides Again?

People often ask me:

“Will I ever be able to talk to my guides again?”

That’s a story about the future. My guidance is to focus on your quality of life right now. For some, entity issues have been ongoing for years and deeply debilitating. The better question to ask is:

How can I create fulfillment and well-being in the meantime?

Then, consider your next steps. What small experiments or practices might help you continue moving forward? Don’t let longing for perfect clarity stop you from living well in this moment.

Engaging safely with non-ordinary reality is a learned skill. You need excellent energetic boundaries in those realms. Unless you’ve developed those skills, trying to hear your guides could do more harm than good.  It’s simply much more complex to learn the skill of talking to your guides but not entities than it is to close pathways and strengthen your psychic protection.  Get clear and free of entities and then consider how you might want to go forward with learning to safely talk to your guides.

Final Thoughts

There’s nothing wrong with offering a simple prayer like: “Spirit, help me have safe travels.”

Your guides can hear you, even if you don’t consciously hear them in return. But attempting to hear an answer, without solid psychic boundaries, can leave you exposed to energies you truly don’t want.

I understand how hard this message can feel, especially for people who already struggle to find joy and meaning in the human experience. It may feel as though I’m suggesting giving up something precious and magical. I deeply understand that longing. Early in my journey, I was profoundly driven to hear my guides, and shamanic journeying was thrilling and transformative for me.

But it’s so important to understand how this mechanism works—and to be honest with yourself about your capabilities—so you don’t accidentally invite a crowd of entities back into your life the moment you’ve finally cleared them away.

So, my advice is this: go within instead. Talk to your Inner Wise One. Lean into the wisdom already present inside you. It’s one of the safest ways to protect yourself from spirit attachment as you continue on your spiritual path.
